Village United Methodist Church took the first
steps in initiating a prayer shawl ministry in January 2008 with the
formation of a knitting/ crocheting group. The shawls were
consecrated at the June 15 church service.
One of the first, official prayer shawl ministries was established
in Hartford, Conn., in 1998. One of its founders has written,
"Shawls are symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug,
shelter, and beautify." (Written in 1998 by Janet Bristow, copyright
2008).
Taking the lead from the Connecticut organization, Village United
Methodist Church will be distributing the prayer shawls to people
undergoing an illness and recovery, medical procedures, stress,
people who have experienced a loss, during bereavement, or for other
purposes and needs as identified by the clergy staff of VUMC.
If you are interested in joining the group and feel that your skills
are a bit rusty, not to worry. Someone will help you get up to
speed on the necessary stitches. Knit and crochet patterns are
provided.
